We, Ontarioians have braved quite the winter. After all that backbreaking shoveling, scraping and slipping is a little spring-cleaning feel like a breeze. Right? Maybe Not. Let's see if I can help you out. Below I have compiled some important, yet easy spring maintenance tips for you to get your home ready for some fun in the sun.

Clean Out Those Gutters

Your gutters are probably not first on your home spring-cleaning list but, by keeping your home's gutters clear of any loose debris you can prevent blockage that can cause expensive water damage. Not only that, less moisture means less likely household pests will find a comfortable home in your house.

Next time it rains, get your rain gear on and take a stroll around your house. Check to ensure there are no leaks in the gutter troughs and that water is flowing easily from the downspouts and away from your home. If you see water leaking you will want to either patch or replace that section. If you see water running over the troughs, you will definitely want to take advantage of the next sunny day and clean them out.

To clean the gutters, grab some gloves and remove any debris you can. Also, use a hose or pressure washer and push it part way down the downspouts and then turn on the tap. The force of the water will dislodge a lot of debris, which will help keep the water moving freely and avoid water and moisture damage.

Be Careful!

Take every precaution when up on your roof. If you have a steep roof or it has recently rained, remember that there are professionals who can do this for you. With ladders, follow all safety directions, and have someone at the base supervising.

Less Moisture Means Less Pests

Reducing moisture buildup around your house makes your home less desirable to the destructive invasion of carpenter ants, termites and other pests. These household insects are attracted to moisture, and will tunnel into the wood frame of your house creating their nests, proving to be truly detrimental it's structural integrity. You can also make your home less welcoming to insects by keeping weeds, shrubs and other organic material several inches away from the sides of your home.

Roof Surfaces

On a dry day, take a look at your home's shingles and flashings. Any damaged shingles should be patched and taken care of. Check the metal flashing around any chimneys and vents for potential wear points. These can be patched with high quality caulk or similar product and will easily prevent excessive water damage in the future. Replace any significantly damaged and deteriorated flashing.
